Braai Culture: Mega 2 (Hatfield, Harare)

Mega 2 sitting area

In the Hatfield suburb of Harare, tucked into Logan road almost to the point of being hidden is Mega 2 (II) Bar. The perfect spot for a chill session, with alcohol, a kids chill area, the open air, braai meat and sadza all within reach. It’s designed for laid back conversations and letting your worries melt away (Well in the summer because this past weekend I couldn’t stop thinking about my cold feet). There’s a mini hippodrome there filled with fitted tables and chairs and in the surroundings they’re gazebos and a small children’s playground.

They thought of most things but as usual with Zimbabwean restaurants they have no disability access. There’s no ramp to enter the premises and the entrances to the butchery and the bar too are not accessible. But moving on… The place has a calm atmosphere, it feels like a space for you to be around others while everyone minds their own. They’re pool tables in one end of the mini hippodrome and music is blaring out at the other. As I sat at our table I got lost watching the braai masters of the day turning the meat at undetermined intervals while sprinkling salt here and there.

A Carling Black Label

Mega 2 sort of operates like an on demand catering service. You go to the butchery and pick out your prefered cuts of meat and then head to the braai masters to hand it over. The braai masters will take care of it from there and you can hang back at your table. We did exactly that. I nursed a Carling Black Label while indulging my social media addiction and tried to be patient. I was ridiculously hungry. Luckily they had precooked “MAZONDO” and we got batch to dive into while waiting on the meat.

Zondo (Cow heels/trotters/hooves) ($1)

Zondo (Cow heels/trotters) rating: 4.1/5

Cow heels are a Zimbabwean delicacy, in fact they’re loved all over Southern Africa. The first thing I look at when it comes to them, is if the heels are properly scrapped then comes how cooked through they are, the texture and the flavour. I have to say they got almost everything right, although on this occasion they were peri-peri (The chilli was cooked into them so they were spicy spicy) and I might have been eluded by the full flavours. The meat was cooked through with just the right texture and it packed a full on spicy kick.

Chakalaka sausage, beef & pork ($13)

Meat rating: 3.7/5

The meat from Mega 2 is not richly marinaded but it has more of a simple dry rub of salt on the meat and then it’s tossed onto the flames. Yet it doesn’t turn out bad at all. The meat was well done (Which is the only way to have meat unless you’re a vampire) and the chakalaka sausage was bursting full of flavours and it was absolutely succulent internally. The braai team salted the meat just right and it was great pairing for the Carling Black Label.

Sadza

Sadza rating: 4/5

The sadza is made with super refined mealie meal, it’s lump free and it had a healthy level of thickness. What more can be said? It was a great plate of sadza, the kind you have to try for yourself to truly appreciate.

DISABILITY ACCESS RATING: 0/5

For the food and service from the staff I wouldn’t mind going there again but then the lack of disability access.
