Fast Food: A Premier Fish Inn Experience

Fish Inn menu

Recently we stopped at the food court situated by the Kwame Nkrumah mall in Harare’s CBD. A convenient location if you have business in town but also an inconvenient location because that has to be one of the busiest food courts in Harare. Whether it’s mid-morning or late afternoon they’re long lines to order and hardly any free tables for you to sit. While being home to Fish Inn, the food court also hosts several other outlets under Simbisa Brands.

Simply on the outlook, the food court is a nice location. It’s more recent than a lot of other food outlets so the furnishings are still palatable. They’re centrally located wash basins that cater to hygiene while dining and there’s a good atmosphere about the place. It however does not have disability access which is always a sticking factor for me.

On the occasion this was my first ever experience of Fish Inn and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I love fish but I don’t have it often enough because of the general labour in preparing it. Well such things as fish fingers are simple enough to prepare but I’m too broke for that. However Fish Inn offers more than just fish, as shawarma and sausages are among their offerings. We went with their popular fish & chips which has a battered and fried hake fillet. We also went for their shawarma.

Shawarma ($2)

Shawarma rating: 4/5

My typical experience of a shawarma has been from Eat’n’lick and when compared to Fish Inn’s offering, the two couldn’t be more different. Yet it’s a good different. The tortilla/wrap is well made and the cone is filled with chicken, an assortment of vegetables, chips (fries) and a healthy offering of sauce. It’s a great balance of different textures in every bite and it’s bursting full of flavours. The chicken is tender and it’s about as good a shawarma as I’ve had so far.

Fish & chips ($3)

Fish rating: 3.8/5

Their fish comes with the warning it might contain fish bones which is a standard disclaimer but I’m glad to say on this occasion they were none. The batter isn’t fried to an extremely crispy texture but it’s slightly soft with just enough thickness. It’s decently seasoned while the fish is well cooked. It would even go down 2 times better with a dip for it. Probably something like sweet and sour would be perfect.

Chips rating: 3.6/5

Simbisa brands outlets don’t usually have great chips but I’m happy to say Fish Inn breaks that mould. The chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were all perfectly done but just lacked on seasoning. A little chip spice and they would’ve been perfect.

DISABILITY ACCESS RATING: 2/5

Side note: I hope the cashier who served us is having a good day today because she clearly wasn’t having one on the day we visited.
