Restaurant Review: Ela The Garden (Newlands, Harare)

Part of Ela The Garden’s sitting area

Hidden at back of 15 York Ave in Newlands is the gem that is Ela The Garden. The Greek Fusion restaurant catering for vegans, vegetarians, non-gluten eaters and meat lovers. Yet far beyond it’s food offerings is the escape it’s quaint and rather scenic location offers. It’s the perfect place to hideout and get some work or to just relax & recharge. There’s amazing flora and free flowing air perfect for that mental health break.

Ela The Garden is also regularly host to various live music acts (for a cover charge) and other shows that showcase different creatives like comedy. They don’t have a wide menu but it’s easy to find something to love from the options available. We got into a burger and some wraps, before relaxing with some cake while the sun set and we tried out the hammock.

It should be noted that although it’s mostly physically accessible to get parts of the sitting area, Ela The Garden lacks accessibility in other regards (Restrooms etc).

Chicken burger & couscous salad

Chicken burger rating: 3.2/5

One thing I’ll give to Ela right from the first bite, is how well they infuse flavours into their food. The patty on the chicken burger was tender, succulent and absolutely delectable. It was standout and the choice of bun here didn’t do it justice at all but together the textures were quite alright. A softer bun, lightly toasted with that patty would be out of this world.

Couscous salad rating: 3/5

This was my first encounter with a couscous salad and from first impressions it seems like one of those things you have to acquire a taste for. It’s soft and rather creamy you could say with an inert flavour profile that is dominated by whatever you infuse it. So every bite was filtered with hints of kick from the peppers and I think it’s something I can easily grow to love.

Chicken wrap & couscous salad

Chicken wrap rating: 4.1/5

The chicken wrap has to be star on the Ela The Garden menu. It’s ridiculous how good it is. The flavours, the textures, it’s as if the palate is being serenaded by the equivalent of the most soulful of love songs but it’s food. It was by far the best thing we tasted. The tortilla wrap was toasted to perfection, the chicken was succulent and the flavours simply exploded in your mouth.

Cake & tea tray

Chocolate cake rating: 4/5

We ended the day with a slice of chocolate cake and tea, which was the perfect summation of our lunch date. The cake was just so chocolatey and decadent. It was that rich chocolate taste that feels luxurious on your tongue and paired with the tea, it couldn’t get better.

DISABILITY ACCESS RATING: 1/5

Ela The Garden is also really affordable which adds to it’s attraction and we’ll surely be returning there to catch one of their live music shows.
