Restaurant Review: Antonios (Lewisam, Harare)

Antonios Short Stop Diner

Antonios is a restaurant/takeaway franchise currently only found in Harare but with quite the significant footprint for a non-fast food outlet. Describing itself as a “Mediterranean Deli”, Antonios has quite the varied menu. It covers almost everything with wraps, burgers, pizzas, salads, a grilled selection and even sushi at some of it’s outlets.

This is something many outlets attempt but rarely pull off but Antonios is one of those exceptions. We paid a visit to Antonios diner style outlet in Harare’s Lewisam suburb. The outlet is small, with a very limited sitting area that doesn’t offer up the best ambiance and sadly lacks any disability access. At the end of the meal, it dawned on us that the outlet was more suited for a takeaway service.

Antonios’ notification board

Antonios can best be described as fast-medium in terms of the speed of their service. They won’t get the food to you at the pace of a Drive-Thru, but even if you’re really hungry you’ll have your food before you’re irritated. Something to be appreciated because Antonios has a steady stream of traffic at almost any given most.

We got a selection of menu items that robustly explored Antonios ability with different styles of cuisine, and it’s fair to say we weren’t disappointed. When the food arrived, it instantly passed the nose with it’s rather savoury aroma.

Crumbed chicken pops ($5)

Crumbed chicken pops: 3.8/5

The crumbed chicken pops were ordered as a starter but they turned into one of the best things we had. I couldn’t get enough of them. The chicken was tender and succulent, with light seasoning that made it especially delicious when dipped in sauce. It also had just the right amount of breading, which added a different dimension of texture to every bite.

Pulled pork pizza ($8)

Pulled pork pizza: 3.8/5

Antonios’ pulled pork pizza brings together American and Italian cuisine. The pizza has a thin base (emphasis on thin) that comes with that almost perfect freshly baked taste. It has a more than healthy offering of toppings, that include a delicious pizza sauce, pulled pork, onion, green pepper, mozzarella, and cheddar? There’s a very tangy flavour to it, that’s complimented by the different textures for a delicious taste. If you favour savoury foods, that are very light on sweetness, then this is the pizza for you.

House butger ($4)

Antonios house burger: 3/5

Antonios’ house burger comes with a regular bun, a burger patty, lettuce, tomato, onions and burger sauce. I have to say for a house burger it doesn’t disappoint. The patty is well cooked and paired with fresh vegetables and a very fresh bun. It’s flavourful, with a mix of slightly sweet and savoury but however there’s a certain condiment in the patty that feels overpowering. I would definitely like to try their other burger offferings.

DISABILITY ACCESS RATING: 0/5

Antonios definitely has a repeat customer in me. The pizza left an impression.
